Seabed Minerals Advisory Committee Members Formally Appointed
The Seabed Minerals Authority (SBMA) Seabed Minerals (SBM) Advisory Committee members were formally appointed on Tuesday, 17 February, at the Cabinet Room, Office of the Prime Minister, in a decorum that marked an important milestone in strengthening community representation within the seabed minerals sector.
The Prime Minister and Minister Responsible for Seabed Minerals, Hon. Mark Brown, delivered opening remarks, reaffirming Government’s commitment to responsible stewardship of the Cook Islands’ ocean resources and to ensuring that community voices remain central in the development of the seabed minerals sector. He highlighted that the SBM Advisory Committee plays an important role in bringing community perspectives to the Authority, helping ensure that policy considerations remain robust, inclusive, and grounded in national values.
Seabed Minerals Commissioner Beverly Ataera also welcomed attendees and acknowledged both new and returning members. She emphasised that while the SBM Advisory Committee is not a decision-making body, it serves as a critical facilitative channel between Government and the Community — providing recommendations, raising awareness, and supporting informed dialogue on seabed minerals matters, consistent with its Terms of Reference.
Bishop Tutai Pere was reappointed as Chairman of the SBM Advisory Committee, and George George Williamson was appointed as the new Vice Chairman, reflecting continuity and strengthened leadership within the Committee.
In his remarks, Chairman Bishop Tutai Pere acknowledged the responsibility entrusted to the Committee and reaffirmed its commitment to act in good faith, uphold integrity, and represent the diverse perspectives of the Cook Islands community. He encouraged members to work collaboratively and respectfully, ensuring that community voices remain heard as the sector evolves.
The Minister then confirmed the reappointment of continuing members:
Maru Mariri-Tepou
Tamuera (Sam) Peyroux-Napa (absent)
During the ceremony, warrants of appointment were presented to three newly appointed members::
Phillip Vakatini Ariki
Ngara Katuke
Ngavaevae Papatua
The SBM Advisory Committee is composed of community leaders representing a broad cross-section of the Cook Islands, including church, culture, business, youth and the wider public. Members serve a two-year term and are expected to actively participate in meetings, consultations and training to ensure they are well-informed and effective representatives. The Committee reports to the Authority and provides recommendations on policy and other matters relating to the seabed minerals sector, in line with its Terms of Reference and Code of Conduct.
The successful appointment reinforced the Government’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and meaningful community engagement in the seabed minerals sector. SBMA looks forward to working closely with the SBM Advisory Committee as it continues to support informed dialogue and responsible stewardship of the Cook Islands’ ocean resources.
