The first of the Seabed Minerals research vessels berthed at Avatiu Harbour this week.

The MV Seasurveyor which is chartered by the CIC Seabed Minerals exploration company arrived on Thursday.

On a long-term charter from vessel owner Bill Day of Seaworks in New Zealand, the 39-metre catamaran accommodates up to 24 people and is capable of research cruises lasting up to 30 days.

“This is an exciting time for us here at CIC Ocean Research, and an exciting time for the Cook Islands as well,” said Shona Lynch, CIC’s Country Manager.

The research and exploration will be carried out over the next five years and will not only enhance the understanding of minerals lying on the seafloor, but also assist in learning more about the deep-ocean environment in general, Lynch said.

A blessing of the vessel will be held prior to its first expedition.
